![]() A relief depicting a generalized image of the deceased sometimes evoked aspects of the person’s life, with the addition of a servant, possessions, dog, etc. Each funerary monument had an inscribed base with an epitaph, often in verse that memorialized the dead. Relief sculpture, statues ( 32.11.1), tall stelai crowned by capitals ( 11.185a-c,f,g), and finials marked many of these graves. by aristocratic families of Attica in private burial grounds along the roadside on the family estate or near Athens. The most lavish funerary monuments were erected in the sixth century B.C. From depictions on white-ground lekythoi, we know that the women of Classical Athens made regular visits to the grave with offerings that included small cakes and libations. Immortality lay in the continued remembrance of the dead by the living. Very few objects were actually placed in the grave, but monumental earth mounds, rectangular built tombs, and elaborate marble stelai and statues were often erected to mark the grave and to ensure that the deceased would not be forgotten. Following the prothesis, the deceased was brought to the cemetery in a procession, the ekphora, which usually took place just before dawn. Lamentation of the dead is featured in Greek art at least as early as the Geometric period, when vases were decorated with scenes portraying the deceased surrounded by mourners. During the prothesis, relatives and friends came to mourn and pay their respects. After being washed and anointed with oil, the body was dressed ( 75.2.11) and placed on a high bed within the house. Relatives of the deceased, primarily women, conducted the elaborate burial rituals that were customarily of three parts: the prothesis (laying out of the body ( 54.11.5), the ekphora (funeral procession), and the interment of the body or cremated remains of the deceased. Ancient literary sources emphasize the necessity of a proper burial and refer to the omission of burial rites as an insult to human dignity ( Iliad 23: 71). The deceased was then prepared for burial according to the time-honored rituals. The Greeks believed that at the moment of death, the psyche, or spirit of the dead, left the body as a little breath or puff of wind. ![]() Indeed, the ghost of the great hero Achilles told Odysseus that he would rather be a poor serf on earth than lord of all the dead in the Underworld ( Odyssey 11: 489–91). In the Odyssey, Homer describes the Underworld, deep beneath the earth, where Hades, the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, and his wife, Persephone, reigned over countless drifting crowds of shadowy figures-the “shades” of all those who had died. The ancient Greek conception of the afterlife and the ceremonies associated with burial were already well established by the sixth century B.C.

So, what does a music curator do? Basically, music curators are people who work off listening to music (to a lot of music), categorizing it, and then spreading it to the world.įor example, a music curator in a radio station is the person who receives all of the new music, listens to it, organizes it in the station’s library, categorizes it, and finally, chooses which songs will be playing for a certain amount of time. Some playlists can be even more selective and thematic, for example, a playlist featuring only female vocals. ![]() Photo by ANTHONY SHKRABA production from Pexels There is a lot of knowledge that’s needed for this, mainly because they need to keep in mind the radio’s listener analytics, meaning that the music cannot be the few songs that the curator liked, the songs had to align with the client’s demographic. So, let’s just say that Spotify playlists now function as the new radio.ĭecades ago, the radio was people’s main source of new music. ![]() The songs that made it to the radio were the ones from leading artists, and the ones that the mainstream public was discovering, so something very similar happens with a Spotify playlist. Now, let’s see what are the general curator skills:ġ) Passion: it is a repetitive job, a tedious one, too. ![]() Liking music is one thing, but developing the patience, knowledge, and love a curator needs to spend the whole day listening to music, every single day, it’s all rooted in a strong passion for music. Nothing else.Ģ) Technical knowledge: Liking a song is one thing, but being able to recognize recording techniques, vocals, instruments, genres, beats, influences, etc… It is a matter of having a deep knowledge of the music industry and how a song is produced. Even worse, finding those genres to be disgusting! Well, bad news, it’s part of the job to be listening to all kinds of music, not just one.Īlso, creating a compilation of music that aligns with a person’s mood, or the relaxed feel of the atmosphere basically creating the playlist’s theme is a matter of knowing a lot about music in general.ģ) Appreciation for all genres: Let’s say someone is well versed in just rock music… But with knowing nothing of the hip-hop genre or pop. It’s almost impossible to focus on one specific genre only, mainly at the beginning, so you need to know and appreciate a vast amount of genres to start at this job.Ĥ) Strong organizational skills: Curator roles don’t stop at listening to music and selecting which one goes out into the world. Another part is having a precisely organized library, with the songs divided into several categories so it’s fairly simple to find one at a given time. Organizational skills are a must for this job.Īs you may imagine, getting in contact with such big companies is quite difficult, and it’s already mentioned that technology has evolved into making things a bit easier, and that’s true. Luckily, there are more ways in which playlist curators can make money out of making a playlist. That’s by becoming a curator for platforms that offer song reviewing services to artists, contacting them to playlist curators, and paying for that service.Īt SoundCampaign, playlist curators earn money on a level-based system. The lowest level gets $1 per song reviewed, while the highest level gets $14 per song reviewed. ![]() We offer timely, integrated analysis of companies, sectors, markets and economies, helping clients with their most critical decisions.
